What is isometric paper?

Isometric paper is ruled with three sets of parallel lines: one vertical and two at 30° to the horizontal. Together they form equilateral triangles that match the angles of an isometric projection, so you can draw a 3D object by following the grid instead of measuring angles. The size setting is the length of each triangle side; parallel lines end up about 0.87 times that distance apart.

What isometric paper is used for

  • Isometric projections in design and engineering classes
  • Sketching buildings, rooms and product ideas in 3D
  • Drawing maps for tabletop and video games
  • Geometric patterns, quilting and tessellation designs

Isometric paper: frequently asked questions

What does the triangle size setting mean?

It is the side length of each equilateral triangle. A 5 mm setting gives triangles with 5 mm sides, and the gap between parallel lines is about 4.33 mm.

What is the difference between isometric and graph paper?

Graph paper uses squares, which suits flat 2D drawings. Isometric paper uses triangles at 30°, which suits drawing objects in 3D without perspective distortion.

Which triangle size is best for beginners?

Start with 1 cm triangles, which are large enough to see the structure clearly. Move to 5 mm once you are comfortable and want more detail.
