What is engineering paper?
Engineering paper, also called an engineering pad or computation paper, is graph paper with ten squares per inch and a heavier line every inch, traditionally printed in light green so pencil work stands out. Engineers and students use it for calculations, free-body diagrams and quick scale sketches. On US Letter with half-inch margins the grid is 75 × 100 squares.
What engineering paper is used for
- Engineering and physics homework and calculations
- Free-body diagrams, circuit sketches and graphs
- Scale drawings where one square equals a fixed unit
- Lab notebooks and data plotting

How to print engineering paper at actual size
- 01
Click “Download PDF” and open the file in your PDF viewer.
- 02
In the print dialog, set the scale to 100% or “Actual size”, not “Fit to page”.
- 03
Choose the paper size that matches your settings and print. Measure one square or line with a ruler to check.
Engineering paper: frequently asked questions
Why is engineering paper green?
Light green lines are easy to see while you work but stay in the background, so pencil and ink stand out. You can change the color under Line color.
What is the grid size of engineering paper?
Usually 10 squares per inch (1/10 inch squares) with a bold line every inch. Some pads use 5 squares per inch; set the square size to 0.2 inch for that.
Is engineering paper the same as graph paper?
It is a type of graph paper. What sets it apart is the fine 1/10 inch grid, the bold inch lines and the traditional green color.
